A huge thank you from Juliet Gray, Suicide Prevention Lead

Posted Tuesday, 31 January 2017, 3.45pm

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for taking part in R.E.D January and for helping to raise money to help to continue our much needed suicide prevention project.

I have to say its been quite staggering to see the amount go up over the month and the stories unfold .. and totally inspiring too.

Just to explain a bit about where the money will go; all monies raised will go directly to continue our suicide prevention work.

So far we have trained over 3,500 people across Cumbria in some level of suicide prevention ... but we need to train more. We lose, on average, one person each week to suicide in our county - it is a community wide public health issue that we all have a role in.

Our training - be it a basic awareness session or the two day intervention training - aims to enable people to feel more comfortable and more confident in talking about suicide - knowing that they aren't going to make things worse.

In each year one in seventeen of us will have thoughts of suicide, we need people to be ready, willing and able to have conversations, be 'helpfully nosey' and prepared to ask directly about thoughts of suicide and then knowing where to refer on to for further help if needed.

If you want to know more about the free training that we provide or more about the 'Suicide Safer Eden' project or suicide prevention in general across the county, please feel free to contact me.

And once again a huge thank you ... not only have you done good things for yourself and your health and wellbeing (although I'm sure at times you were cursing it all!), raised loads of money to keep this valuable work going but also you’ve promoted mental health and suicide prevention .. and that helps challenge stigma.

So thanks loads - and heres to R.E.D January 2018 - get it in your diary!!
