Yoga for Men

We're excited to announce Caroline, our Community Engagement Office, will now be offering Yoga classes for Men!

These will be held on a Wednesday evening from Currock Community Centre, led by Caroline Robinson, our Community Engagement Officer who recently qualified as a Yoga Alliance Teacher

We asked Caroline to tell us more about the classes:

  • Yoga for Men – how does it differ from straight forward yoga?

Since I started talking about starting to run Yoga classes in Carlisle, I've noticed that whenever I mention Yoga to men the response is 'Ooff I'm not flexible enough for that.'

There are many barriers between people engaging with exercise classes: ‘everyone will be better than me’, ‘I’ll be rubbish’, ‘I won’t know anyone’, ‘everyone will stare at me’. In my experience, although men like the idea of giving it a go, they're worried they'll be the only man in a Yoga class and it puts them off having a go.

So I started floating the idea of having a session just for them - and it seems to be a popular one!

  • What will the course will cover?

I hadn’t intended it to be a ‘course’ as such. It will be an ongoing class for people to dip in and out for as long as they find it useful. That said, the session will include a mixture of physical practice (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) as well as mindfulness and mediation. I will recommend that some of these practices are taken home, where it is safe to do, as regular practice has a greater impact.

  • What will a session be like – e.g. purely movement /silence/ meditation

We will start the session with a chat about intentions for the class then go through some warm up exercises and a few poses (asanas) followed by stretches, breathing techniques then a short relaxation meditation.

  • Who is it suitable for? Beginners/intermediate?

All men are welcome - I can adapt all postures to all abilities.

  • Cost?

We can fit up to 10 people

  • Do people have to book?

Yes – because we have limited space.

  • Is it open to men and women?

It’s worth noting that I run a Yoga for Mental Health class on a Monday evening from Carlisle Eden Mind. Get in touch if this is of interest

  • Start and end time

6pm – 7.30pm

  • Do the participants need to bring anything?

We will have mats available, but please bring your own if preferred. And wear something comfortable, and stretchy.

  • Can you just come for 1 session?

You can come for as long as you find it useful.
